Solaris (1972)

“Solaris” (1972) is a Soviet science fiction film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, based on the novel by StanisΕ‚aw Lem. The film stars Donatas Banionis as Kris Kelvin, a psychologist who is sent to a space station orbiting the mysterious planet Solaris.

The crew of the space station has been experiencing strange phenomena, with manifestations of their repressed memories and deepest fears appearing in physical form. As Kelvin investigates, he encounters his own visions, including a recreation of his deceased wife, Hari (played by Natalya Bondarchuk), forcing him to confront his past and the nature of human consciousness.

“Solaris” delves into profound themes such as memory, grief, and the limitations of human understanding. Known for its philosophical depth, slow pacing, and atmospheric visuals, the film contrasts human emotions with the vast, enigmatic universe. Tarkovsky’s adaptation is celebrated for its introspective approach, exploring existential questions and the complexity of human psyche in a science fiction context.
