Masters of the Universe (1987)

Masters of the Universe (1987) is a science fiction fantasy film directed by Gary Goddard, based on the popular He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toy line and animated series by Mattel. The movie stars Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, the heroic warrior from the planet Eternia, and Frank Langella as the evil sorcerer Skeletor.

The film’s plot revolves around Skeletor’s conquest of Castle Grayskull, which grants him near-absolute power. He-Man and his allies, including Teela (Chelsea Field), Man-At-Arms (Jon Cypher), and the dwarf-like inventor Gwildor (Billy Barty), are transported to Earth after a cosmic key, a powerful device that opens portals between worlds, lands in the hands of two teenagers, Julie (Courteney Cox) and Kevin (Robert Duncan McNeill). He-Man must retrieve the key and stop Skeletor before he fully harnesses the power of Grayskull.

While the film takes a lot of liberties with the original cartoon’s plot, moving much of the action to Earth and giving it a more sci-fi feel, it still captures the essence of the battle between good and evil. Frank Langella’s portrayal of Skeletor is widely regarded as the highlight of the movie, with his menacing performance elevating the character.

Despite its campy feel and mixed critical reception, Masters of the Universe has developed a cult following over the years, especially among fans of the original He-Man series. Its blend of action, fantasy, and 1980s aesthetics make it a nostalgic piece of pop culture.
