1408 (2007) is a psychological horror film directed by Mikael Håfström, based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name. The movie stars John Cusack as Mike Enslin, a skeptical author who investigates haunted locations for his books. Despite his disbelief in the supernatural, he decides to spend the night in room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City, a room infamous for numerous deaths and paranormal occurrences.
Samuel L. Jackson plays Mr. Olin, the hotel’s manager, who warns Enslin about the dangers of staying in the room, but Enslin ignores the warnings, confident that he will debunk the myths surrounding 1408. Once inside, he quickly realizes that the room is not only haunted but also has the power to distort reality, trapping him in a terrifying psychological nightmare.
The film builds tension through its eerie atmosphere, unsettling imagery, and Enslin’s growing descent into madness as he confronts personal demons and supernatural forces. 1408 is praised for John Cusack’s compelling performance, the psychological depth of its horror, and its ability to create suspense without relying heavily on gore.
