Sinister (2012)

“Sinister” (2012) is a supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, and James Ransone.
The story follows true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) who moves his family into a new home to work on his latest book. Unbeknownst to his wife and children, the house was the site of a horrific family murder that he hopes to use as the basis for his new project. While exploring the attic, Ellison discovers a box of old home movies that depict various families being brutally murdered.

As Ellison watches the footage, he realizes that the murders are connected by a common figure, a sinister entity known as Bughuul or “Mr. Boogie,” who appears in each of the films. As he delves deeper into the mystery, Ellison begins to experience terrifying supernatural occurrences that threaten his sanity and the safety of his family.
The film is notable for its atmospheric tension, eerie visuals, and disturbing plot. It explores themes of obsession, the impact of violence, and the supernatural influence of evil forces. Ethan Hawke’s performance as a desperate and increasingly paranoid writer adds to the film’s sense of dread and unease.

“Sinister” received positive reviews for its effective scares, haunting score, and strong performances. It has since become a well-regarded entry in the horror genre, known for its chilling atmosphere and the creation of the memorable horror villain Bughuul. The success of the film led to a sequel, “Sinister 2,” released in 2015.
