John Carter (2012)
“John Carter” (2012) is a science fiction action film directed by Andrew Stanton, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel “A Princess of Mars.” The movie stars Taylor Kitsch as John Carter, a Civil War veteran who is mysteriously transported to Mars, known as Barsoom by its inhabitants. On Mars, he discovers he has enhanced physical abilities due to the planet’s lower gravity. Carter becomes embroiled in a conflict between the native Martian species, including the red-skinned Heliumites and the green-skinned Tharks.
He allies with Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Helium, played by Lynn Collins, in her struggle to save her people. The film’s visual effects and action sequences were praised, but it received mixed reviews overall. Despite its ambitious scope, “John Carter” was a box office disappointment, failing to recoup its high production and marketing costs. The movie has since gained a cult following for its imaginative world-building and adventurous spirit. “John Carter” explores themes of heroism, identity, and redemption, set against the backdrop of an alien world.
