“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (released as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in the U.S.) is a 2001 fantasy film directed by Chris Columbus and based on the first novel of the “Harry Potter” series by J.K. Rowling. The film introduces audiences to the magical world of Harry Potter and the journey he embarks on as a young wizard at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The story follows Harry Potter, an orphaned boy raised by his neglectful aunt, uncle, and cousin, who discovers on his eleventh birthday that he is actually a wizard. Hagrid, a friendly giant, informs Harry of his true identity and reveals that he is to attend Hogwarts, a prestigious school for young witches and wizards. Harry also learns that his parents were killed by Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard whose name still strikes fear into the hearts of everyone in the magical world.

The climax of the film occurs when Harry confronts Professor Quirrell, who is secretly harboring the weakened Lord Voldemort. Harry’s courage, aided by the protective power his mother’s love left on him, allows him to stop Voldemort from obtaining the stone.
